Over two thirds of the world’s population is still vegetarian (they eat some dairy) or vegan (they eat nothing from animals) and therefore they consume little or no animal protein. These population groups show no signs of such degenerative illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, obesity or MS.

Did you know that 95% of the body’s protein is recycled? Did you know that the liver synthesizes new proteins from amino acids that are not necessarily derived from the foods you eat? Each cell in the body makes proteins. The nucleus of each cell is constantly engaged in protein production. Brain cells produce proteins, known as neuropeptides, in response to every thought or feeling you have. Neuropeptides, also known as neurotransmitters, are the molecular language that allows mind, body, and emotions to communicate. The body makes thousands of different enzymes, all of which consist of proteins. Not eating protein foods does not diminish the body’s ability to make proteins. On the contrary…overeating proteins can severely congest the blood and lymph and can suffocate cells, thereby diminishing their ability to manufacture proteins. In fact, most protein deficiencies result from eating too much protein!

Over the years we have been misguided about what is healthy and what is not. Why not give your body a healthy challenge and follow a vegan diet for a month or so and see how you feel. Your liver and gall bladder will thank you!

The PERFECT REMEDY FOR Pain Sufferers: The Galatea Method

For Megan B., it started with aches and pains in childhood, assumed to be growing pains. Backaches, headaches and sore knees often prevented Megan from enjoying her youth. Doctors insisted that the pains were due to growth spurts, and assured Megan that her pain would soon go away. But it didn’t go away: it got worse.

Megan’s suffering continued into adulthood and, after going through a very difficult divorce, her stress level went off the charts. It was then that her pain became more widespread and constant…and eventually unbearable. Some days it was all she could do to walk her three kids to school in the morning. Other days her legs aches so much she couldn’t even manage the three blocks to the school.

Three years ago Megan walked into her doctor’s office in tears, unable to take the pain anymore. Her doctor ordered every test available, but after x-rays, cat scans, MRI and various specialists the only conclusion was the assumption of Fibromyalgia. Megan was sentenced to a life of suffering , with Tylenol 3’s and antidepressants as her daily staples. Regular chiropractic visits helped in the beginning; in fact 3 to 4 visits per week prevented Megan from being completely bedridden, but after a while the chiropractic adjustments became too painful.

It was on a particularly difficult day that Megan was talking to a friend who was telling her that she had just been for some Bowen Therapy and how great she was feeling after only two treatments for sciatica. Her friend tried to explain the treatment and really stressed the fact that it was very gentle and addressed the whole body.

“I had never heard of Bowen,” Megan recalls, “but I was so desperate I called The Galatea Method. After my second treatment I felt significant relief from my pain and after four treatments I gained movement in my neck. For the first time in years I was waking up in the morning without a headache. Without question the treatments I have received from Ady Strickland at The Galatea Method have changed my life!”

The technique involves gentle, precisely placed, soft tissue manipulation at specific locations along the spine, legs, arms and neck. Its founder, Tom Bowen described the technique as a “gift from God”, as he was able to intuitively identify problem areas in the body and simply release the tension. Since his passing, Tom Bowen’s method has evolved into a well-structured series of procedures. The practitioner rolls a fingertip over the muscle or tendon, disturbing it, without sliding the skin. There is a subtle vibrational effect through the muscle that affects the nervous system. It is like plucking a guitar string or letting go of a string on a bow and arrow. It can be described as “playing the nervous system.”

Bowen Therapy is not only effective for fibromyalgia, it can be used to treat spinal issues, sports injuries (the more acute the injury the better), frozen shoulder, whiplash, infertility, arthritis, tennis elbow and asthma to name a few. It also has a dynamic impact on the liver, kidneys, intestines as well as endocrine, adrenal and thyroid function. To sum it up…Bowen reminds the body how to heal itself in a surprisingly small number of treatments, no x-rays or other tools required. Results are long-term and most clients do not need to return unless they re-injure themselves.

Megan, who had been forced to leave her part-time job because of the pain, no longer sits at home in tears. She has now returned to work, enjoys walking her kids to and from school, and runs with her dog. “Am I cured?” Megan asks, “am I totally pain free? No. I still have occasional bad days but they are so few and far between and they are manageable. I am off of the anti-depressants and I rarely need to take a pain-killer. Thanks to Ady Strickland at the Galatea Method I finally have my quality of life back!”

The Galatea Method for Natural Health and Wellbeing is located at 60 Russell Street West in Lindsay next to NYO. Ady Strickland has been practicing holistic complementary therapies for 16 years and specializes in the Bowen Technique, Holistic Nutrition Counselling, Exercise Rehabilitation and is currently studying Classical Homeopathy. She can be reached at 324-7037. For more information go to www.galateamethod.ca

There are a lot of granola bars out there promising quick energy or a healthy snack. But do you know how healthy they really are, or how many preservatives they have?

Here is a tasty recipe that has good ingredients and you will know exactly what you are eating. You can cut these up into portion sizes and wrap them individually and either refrigerate or freeze them to keep them fresh.

Where it calls for nuts, it is best to chop them into slightly smaller pieces than whole nuts, as the bars stick together better.

Energy Bars

1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup honey (or agave)
1/2 cup almond butter
1 3/4 cup mixed nuts and seeds (sunflower, sesame, hemp, pumpkin)
1 1/4 shredded unsweetened coconut
1 cup whole oats (not quick cook oats)
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup good quality chocolate chopped into chunks

Have all dry ingredients ready as once you have melted the other ingredients, you need to mix it together quickly. Rub a 9 x 12 pan with a light coating of oil.

Melt the oil, then stir in the honey and nut butter in a sauce pan. Bring to a low boil for 2-3 minutes and then add all the dry ingredients and mix until totally blended. Press into the oiled pan and place into fridge to harden. Once it hardens, remove from fridge to get to room temperature and cut into squares. Cool again and removed cut squares to wrap or eat!

I know that the summer has been a blur and that the idea of order and routine is appealing but just as frantic. But I just wanted to remind Moms and teachers of the importance of great nutrition for our kids when they are back at school and making sure that they leave the house with a very square meal, and a well balanced lunch to go.
A few suggestions for breakfast: scrambled eggs and raw vegetables, Ezekiel bread and almond butter, steel cut oats with almond milk, nuts and seeds, berries and hemp hearts, or a smoothie which personally I choose because you can pack them with nutrition and the kids love them.
TRY: 1 banana, almond milk, scoop of greens powder, whey protein powder, berries, a few ice cubes and serve immediately!
Remember that a daily dose of fish oils or flax oil for kids is a great boost for their brain and should be taken daily!
Also-no sugary drinks because not only is it bad for their teeth but it really affects their blood sugar, moods, learning ability and focus. Choose fresh water every time!

Since I last wrote for the Caps paper I have had a very challenging and unsettling month.

My middle son Jake has been experiencing abdominal pains, extreme thirst, loss of weight, mood swings and erratic behaviour. Keeping in mind that I have been practising holistic health care for 14 years I decided to treat him like I would any other patient. Using my skilful hands managed to get rid of his tummy pains and I convinced myself as his mother that he was fine and just maybe playing me up. But Jake has always been the child that never gets sick not even a cold, so after visiting the Dr. and awaiting blood results the pain increased severely after food and the thirst continued.
It was time for a quick Emergency visit and actually the ER was very quiet that night and when Jake was checked in he was in so much pain and the Dr had thought it was bowel problems but when the Nurse did his blood sugar it was reading at 41! Wow that is not good! He was immediately put on saline (because his body was dehydrated) and then insulin. The ER Dr, who was fantastic, diagnosed TYPE 1 DIABETES. Can you imagine my horror? Suddenly you think back to all you have done for your child up until this point and all the foods you have given him (and believe me we eat better than most) The Dr said it is not because of his diet, it is genetic or caused by a virus that attacks his insulin producing cells. I was told that he would have to take regular insulin and test his blood sugar regularly.

Jake was admitted to hospital in Peterborough (which is like a 5 star hotel by the way) and spent 3 days trying to bring his blood sugar down. This is difficult being that he is an active prepubescent boy. But he began giving his own insulin the day after he was admitted and when I went to see him I was overwhelmed at how brave and strong he was being. It broke my heart to hear that he had asked the Nurse if Diabetes meant that he was going to die.
Jake has managed his own insulin since he has returned home and finally went back to school last week for two days and experienced the opposite to what he presented with in ER that night as he had 3 episodes of hypo reactions where the blood sugar drops too low (2.9-4.4) probably because like any other child he was running around a lot and not taking the foods that I had sent because after all, do your kids always eat their packed lunch?

It is interesting that for several months leading up to this Jake was experiencing days at school where he was almost being assessed as having “Learning Disabilities” as his teachers would pick up on days where he just could not focus and then days when he was like an A student so this was very puzzling for them to assess. Remember that anything that affects blood sugar affects the brain because your brain relies on 80% of your blood glucose to function normally which is why it is so important to address your diet and keep your blood sugar stable. Now it is difficult for Jake and he has a long road ahead of him but I am so proud of him. He has to take 5 injections every day and he is a little like a pin cushion but he is adapting wonderfully. It was such a shock to all of us and has really opened up my eyes as a Nutritionist but as a parent as well. Remember that 6% of the population has diabetes and doesn’t even know it, and constant blood sugar fluctuations can lead to Alzheimer-like conditions in the elderly. Keep an eye on your children’s diet and keep track of what they are eating at school because Jake would always come home with his lunch still in his bag because he “didn’t have time to eat!”

Watch for the signs and if in doubt get it checked out. This completely took me by surprise because Jake has never been ill and we do not have Diabetes in our family. So keep watching out for all those hidden sugars and try and get your kids on an even keel and show them lots of love!

Jake, I am so very proud of you and I know this is a difficult time for you but keep going and we will get you through this together – I Love You!

If you would like more information on Diabetes or blood sugar issues call me at the clinic 324-7037. Take care Cheers ADY

This month I wanted to share with you my experience of visiting my Grandpa in Hospital in the city. Gramps was recently admitted to hospital for acute pain and distress associated with his recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. I saw him about 6 weeks ago and I noticed that he had become a bit forgetful and frail but nothing could have prepared me for my visit with him this March Break. I actually walked right past him in his room-I literally did not recognize him. He was half his normal size and was lying on his back under a crumpled sheet on a very cluttered ward. He slept that day for almost the eight hours that we were visiting and my Mum and Nan were there and my Nan is 84 -extremely great for her age but you can tell that Gramps’s illness is taking its toll on her.

The next day we returned and he was sitting up in the patent’s lounge and when he saw me his fantastically big blue eyes looked up at me and the love and recognition of me was overwhelming – I decided to take him for a walk and he was chatting up all the nurses and bragging about his granddaughter – I was very humbled. When we went back to his room that he shares with a man who screams in pain all the time I began giving him a Bowen treatment and really calmed Gramps down and he passed a lot of wind which he apologized for but said it made him feel a lot better.

I remembered the last treatment I gave him for a tennis elbow pain about 2 years ago and how fit he was. You see Gramps is a very intelligent man and he had his own engineering firm for years. This disease crept up on him and took us all by surprise. The next day he slept all day and was very frustrated by his lack of memory and all the confusion around him. I miss my Gramps!

I realized that good health is truly a gift and there is so much we can do to prevent ourselves from becoming so ill but we think it won’t happen to us – think again!! Nobody is responsible for your health apart from YOU! Do not wait until you feel ill to be ill – take stock of your life and do the things we talk about – eat better, cleanse often, exercise, laugh, de-stress your life – enjoy your kids, have fun – remember the blackout we had a few years ago (yes I know a lot of babies were born 9 months later so some of you got the message) – why not try and have a day per week where you pretend you are in The Little House on the Prairie and turn off your power and enjoy some family time around the candles – your kids will love it! Life is for living – what are you doing with yours?
